Team News: Both Men's Teams Get off to a Flying Start

The Oaks & District Men's Teams have got off to a flying start with a win in their first matches of the 2011 Men's Doubles Summer League.

The first team won their fixture against Oadby (Granville) IV 8-1 playing away. The first team are currently playing in division 6B. This success early in the season means that our team is currently top of the division thanks to a better games percentage than the the other clubs (see results table here ) - long may this continue.

The second team won their division 7A match at home against Wigston II. At time of writing their results need to be posted to the website - they will appear here once they have been uploaded.

Wimbledon Ticket Draw

Our annual Wimbledon ticket draw will be held on Tuesday 10th May 2011 at 7pm in the clubhouse.

We have been allocated five pairs of tickets, including one pair for centre court on Sunday 3rd July, men's finals day. If you are interested you must be there for the draw and be able to pay (by cheque) for your tickets on the night. If you cannot be there on the night you can ask someone else to represent you as long as they are happy to pay for your tickets initially

We have one pair of tickets for the following days (prices are per pair)(the rounds/matches indicated are the ones usually played on those courts and days but may vary due to weather etc):

Fri 24 June centre court £136 (Singles Third Round, Second Half of Draw)

Sat 25 June No 1 court £116 (Singles Third Round, Second Half of Draw)

Sat 25 June No 2 court £98 (Singles Third Round, Second Half of Draw)

Fri 1 July No 1 court £64 (Double's Semi-Finals)

Sun 3 July centre court £220 (Men's Singles Final)

All tickets MUST be paid for on the night.

This is going to be a great evening as our courts have just been painted and this will be our first Club Night on the finished surface (weather permitting) - so don't forget to bring your rackets (and appropriate footwear) as well as your cheque books...

Results of the Leicestershire Veterans LTA Winter League

Oaks and District had three ladies pairs in this years competition - with one pair Becca Riley & Pauline Graham finishing as runners up in their division. They were presented with these beautiful baskets of flowers at the dinner in Leicester.

Discussing her experience of taking part, Pauline said "It was great fun taking part again this year, although the snow in November played havoc with the schedules. Really good to play competitive matches over the winter and I would definitely recommend this competition to any other ladies.This was our secdon year playing together and when you play this many matches with a regular partner you get used to each others playing style and your results improve"

Deadline for entry into next years competition is likely to be sometime in early September and is open to any pair of players who will be over 40 by 31st December 2011. Watch this news blog for more details nearer the time.

Summer Time... light evenings... Club Nights Start This Week!

As the clocks spring forward to mark the start of British Summer Time and the evenings stay lighter we get ready to start our Club Nights. First Club Night will be Tuesday 28th March... get there are early as you can - some people are aiming for 5:30 - as evenings will still be a little 'short' for a few weeks to come...

Also, we have the dates for (most of ) the league fixtures... these are now available under 'Events and Fixtures'... please note that there will be some matches on Thursday's so there will be no Thursday Club Night on those weeks...

If you are interested in playing for the teams please let the Team Captions know as soon as possible as we are starting to fix schedule players and pairs...

Fish & Chip Supper

Our first social event of 2011 will be a Fish and Chip Supper at Rothley Fish and Chip Shop at 7:30pm on 16th March.

The cost is £12 which means that £2 per person will go to club funds.

The Annual General Meeting of the Oaks and District Tennis Club is to be held on Monday,

31^st January 2011 at the Broomleys Cricket Club, Blackwood, Coalville at 7.30 pm.

The present committee would welcome nominations for item 6. The following is the full list of officers and committee: -

Ladies Coaching returns home!

The new net posts and nets were up just in time for the Ladies Wednesday lunchtime coaching session to return to the newly resurfaced courts following the half term break. And the verdict? They're wonderful.... flat, level, pot-hole free and non-slippy despite the slight drizzle.

The weather has got the better of us and we will have to wait until the spring before the new surface is painted and permanent lines marked out. The courts do need to be treated with respect - correct footwear only, no children's toys etc - and we need to do our best to remove leaves and other debris.

Men's Second Team - Final Match against Holwell

The men's 2nd team finished the season with an away match against Holwell Sports.

We had a full team for the night Colin Cockayne, Marcus Clarke, Steve Bloor, Dave Woolcock, Adam Cockayne and Dave Cockayne. But unfortunately when we arrived at Holwell they only had 4 players that turned up so that put us up 3-0 from the start. So that just meant that each of us would play two matches during the night.

We had a good start with both Colin & Marcus winning their match 9-5 and Steve & Dave also picking up a win 9-5, so that meant that overall result was that Oaks had won as we went into the second round.

We played on with Colin & Marcus picking up a 9-1 win although unfortunately Adam and Dave lost their match.

In the final round Steve and Dave lost their match but Adam and Dave won 9-0. To make it an overall victory of 7-2 on the night which made it a good way to finish the season.

I would like to place a note of THANKS to all the members who have helped out by playing in the 2nd team during the season. I hope that everyone who has played a match has enjoyed the time and now look forward to some good club nights before the next season starts. I think that this season has been one of the most enjoyable, which is down to the fact that we have won 3 matches which is more then we have won in the last few years.

Another successful Ladies Charity Tournament & Lunch

Friday 18th June was the date for this years Ladies Charity Tournament and Lunch.

This year followed a different format to previous years as we had a slightly lower turnout then in the past. Ten players had entered the tournament. All names went into a draw for partners. The resulting pairings were: Pauline H & Lesley, Chris and Rachel, Andrea & Janet, Maz & Pauline G, and Kerry & Nicki.

Each pairing was to play each of the other pairs across five rounds, with one pair taking a well earned rest for one round. Each round was for 20 minutes and the result would be decided on the number of games won across all five rounds.

The matches were well fought with a number of great rallies. We had a slight mishap part way through the fourth round when Nicki fell over and twisted her ankle. Pauline H took her place alongside Kerry for the remainder of the round. Fortunately Nicki recovered quickly and was able to return to play the fifth round which she and Kerry won.

At the end of the morning when all the games were counted the winners, by just one game, were Maz & Pauling G. Andrea & Janet were runners up.

The players all retired to the clubhouse for a well earned lunch, joined by the club chairman, Graham, and 7 other members and guests. Lunch was an enjoyable social event and the players would like to thank the 'team' who handled all the catering whilst we were busy on court.

Thanks to Chris for organising the event - how much did we raise Chris? And will somebody please remind me to take photo's next time!

Latest News from club teams....

Whilst Oaks Men's 2nd Team are having their best season for a long time our other teams are all struggling to find that first elusive win of the season.

The Ladies 1st Team played away at Westfields this week. This was a second visit to Westfields as the match was called off due to rain the previous week. For the second time this season we were able to field what Captain Helen called the 'Dream Team' of Kerry and Janet - and they did us proud in the first set winning it. Unfortunately that was our only set of the evening and we lost the fixture 1-8. We can take some comfort in the score lines for each of the sets - we probably won more games in this fixture then in any of the others this year and this is reflected in the late finish of 9:45. Other players who took part in this fixture: Hannah & Katie, Helen & Pauline. It was nevertheless a beautiful, warm evening - only the second of these we have enjoyed this year.

The Ladies 2nd Team were also out on the same evening - this time, playing the return, Home fixture against Charnwood 7. The result was a 3-6 loss, however this is a much better result then their first encounter against Charnwood (0-9) and the team felt justifiably proud of the improvement. Congratulations to Vasanthy and Catherine who won two of the sets. (Some one from Team 2 please tell me who won the third?).

The Men's 1st Team have been unable to register a win so far this season. I have been told that they will do me a match report when they do :-). Their results can be found on the 'Events & Fixtures' page and on the club notice board.
